Translation notes

Small choices shape a clear translation

Equalang keeps the information that makes a sentence useful, not just understandable.

Kinship-Based Pronouns

Vietnamese replaces generic pronouns like "you" with kinship terms based on age and social relationship.

Can you help me with this task?

Anh có thể giúp em việc này không?

Vietnamese Tone Markers

Vietnamese uses six tones that change word meanings, requiring precise diacritic placement in writing.

Tôi muốn mua một con cá.

I want to buy a fish.

Noun Classifiers and Counters

Vietnamese specifies nouns with classifiers (like "cái" or "con"), which English generally omits.

Tôi vừa mua một chiếc xe mới.

I just bought a new car.

Aspect Markers Instead of Conjugation

Vietnamese indicates time with optional particles like "đã" or "sẽ" rather than inflecting verbs.

She had already finished the report before noon.

Cô ấy đã hoàn thành báo cáo trước buổi trưa.

Common questions

Before you translate

How does Equalang handle English idioms and colloquial expressions when translating into Vietnamese?

Equalang uses AI to identify idiomatic meanings and find natural Vietnamese equivalents rather than translating word for word. Because the translation is generated by AI, we recommend having a person review important texts.

Can I watch English or Vietnamese videos with bilingual subtitles using Equalang?

Yes, Equalang can translate video subtitles and web pages through its browser extension, displaying the original text right beside the translation. You can also switch the translation direction at any time with the swap button.

How well is formatting preserved, and what are the limitations?

Formatting is kept as far as possible: PDF translations keep columns, headers and footers, captions, and paragraph levels, bold text stays bold, links in the table of contents and cross-references still work, and sentences split across page breaks are rejoined before translating; Word, PowerPoint, and EPUB files keep their formatting as far as possible, and Excel numbers and formulas are left as they are. Font sizes and line breaks may adjust when translation length changes, and complex layouts, scanned PDFs, heavy watermarks, or language-dependent Excel text formulas should still be checked against the original in the side-by-side workspace.

How is text translation billed, and can I try it out first?

New accounts receive 200 credits to try it out, and purchased credits never expire and are shared across the website and extensions (the smallest pack is $10 for 10,000 credits). Text translation is billed by length at 10 credits per 1,000 tokens, where 1,000 tokens is roughly 750 English words or 1,000 Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, or Hindi characters.

How is my privacy protected and how long are uploaded files kept?

Uploaded files and translated results are kept for 14 days so you can view and download them, then removed from access, and you can request deletion of your submitted content and account data at any time. Equalang does not sell personal data or use your submitted or translated content to train AI models.
