Translation notes

Small choices shape a clear translation

Equalang keeps the information that makes a sentence useful, not just understandable.

Subject and Pronoun Omission

Japanese routinely omits obvious subjects, whereas English strictly requires pronouns.

I went to the store and bought milk.

店に行って牛乳を買いました。

Katakana Loanword Usage

Japanese incorporates many English terms via katakana, sometimes with shifted nuances.

明日のスケジュールをメールで共有します。

I will share tomorrow's schedule by email.

Specific Counter Suffixes

Japanese relies on distinct counters tailored to shape, requiring precise classifier selection.

Please print two sheets of paper.

紙を2枚印刷してください。

Register and Politeness Levels

Japanese modifies verb endings to show respect, which translates into courteous English phrasing.

Common questions

Before you translate

Can I use Equalang to translate web pages and video subtitles between English and Japanese?

Yes, the Equalang browser extension translates web pages and video subtitles in real time, placing the original beside the translation. For critical information, you should still have a person verify the AI output.

Can Equalang translate text from photos between English and Japanese?

Yes, Equalang can recognize and translate text captured in photos in either direction. Because image clarity and context can vary, a person should verify important translations.

How well is formatting preserved, and what are the limitations?

Formatting is kept as far as possible: PDF translations keep columns, headers and footers, captions, and paragraph levels, bold text stays bold, links in the table of contents and cross-references still work, and sentences split across page breaks are rejoined before translating; Word, PowerPoint, and EPUB files keep their formatting as far as possible, and Excel numbers and formulas are left as they are. Font sizes and line breaks may adjust when translation length changes, and complex layouts, scanned PDFs, heavy watermarks, or language-dependent Excel text formulas should still be checked against the original in the side-by-side workspace.

How is text translation billed, and can I try it out first?

New accounts receive 200 credits to try it out, and purchased credits never expire and are shared across the website and extensions (the smallest pack is $10 for 10,000 credits). Text translation is billed by length at 10 credits per 1,000 tokens, where 1,000 tokens is roughly 750 English words or 1,000 Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, or Hindi characters.

How is my privacy protected and how long are uploaded files kept?

Uploaded files and translated results are kept for 14 days so you can view and download them, then removed from access, and you can request deletion of your submitted content and account data at any time. Equalang does not sell personal data or use your submitted or translated content to train AI models.
