Translation notes

Small choices shape a clear translation

Equalang keeps the information that makes a sentence useful, not just understandable.

Dropping Subject Pronouns

Italian naturally omits subject pronouns unless emphasizing who performs the action.

I am ready to leave now.

Ora sono pronto a partire.

Formal and Informal Address

English uses 'you' for everyone, while Italian distinguishes between informal 'tu' and formal 'Lei'.

Lei può inviarmi il contratto?

Could you send me the contract?

Gender Agreement in Verbs

Italian past participles with 'essere' must agree in gender and number with the subject.

Maria è andata a Roma ieri.

Maria went to Rome yesterday.

Position of Adjectives

Descriptive adjectives usually follow the noun in Italian but precede it in English.

She bought a red car.

Ha comprato un'auto rossa.

Common questions

Before you translate

How does Equalang handle idiomatic expressions and proverbs when translating between English and Italian?

Equalang relies on AI to recognize figurative meanings and provide natural equivalents rather than literal translations. Because translations are produced by AI, you should have important texts checked by a person.

Can I use Equalang to browse Italian web pages or watch videos with subtitles?

Yes, Equalang offers a browser extension that translates web pages and video subtitles, showing the original text right beside the translation. You can swap the translation direction at any time with a single click.

How well is formatting preserved, and what are the limitations?

Formatting is kept as far as possible: PDF translations keep columns, headers and footers, captions, and paragraph levels, bold text stays bold, links in the table of contents and cross-references still work, and sentences split across page breaks are rejoined before translating; Word, PowerPoint, and EPUB files keep their formatting as far as possible, and Excel numbers and formulas are left as they are. Font sizes and line breaks may adjust when translation length changes, and complex layouts, scanned PDFs, heavy watermarks, or language-dependent Excel text formulas should still be checked against the original in the side-by-side workspace.

How is text translation billed, and can I try it out first?

New accounts receive 200 credits to try it out, and purchased credits never expire and are shared across the website and extensions (the smallest pack is $10 for 10,000 credits). Text translation is billed by length at 10 credits per 1,000 tokens, where 1,000 tokens is roughly 750 English words or 1,000 Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, or Hindi characters.

How is my privacy protected and how long are uploaded files kept?

Uploaded files and translated results are kept for 14 days so you can view and download them, then removed from access, and you can request deletion of your submitted content and account data at any time. Equalang does not sell personal data or use your submitted or translated content to train AI models.
