Translation notes

Small choices shape a clear translation

Equalang keeps the information that makes a sentence useful, not just understandable.

Inclusive and Exclusive We

Indonesian distinguishes inclusive "kita" from exclusive "kami", which English merges into a single word.

Kami akan menunggu Anda di kantor.

We will wait for you at the office.

Verb Prefixes and Voice

Indonesian relies on active and passive prefixes like "me-" and "di-" to show grammatical relations.

Surat itu sudah ditandatangani oleh manajer.

The letter has been signed by the manager.

Pluralization Through Reduplication

Indonesian often repeats nouns to indicate variety or plurality, unlike English plural suffixes.

Anak-anak sedang bermain di taman.

The children are playing in the park.

Temporal Adverbs over Inflection

Indonesian indicates past or future with adverbs like "sudah" or "akan" instead of changing verb forms.

They will announce the results tomorrow.

Mereka akan mengumumkan hasilnya besok.

Common questions

Before you translate

How does translation distinguish between "kita" and "kami" when translating from English "we"?

The AI determines whether the listener is included based on the surrounding sentence context. For important speeches or client letters, a quick human review ensures the intended nuance is captured.

Can I translate Indonesian web pages or watch videos with English subtitles?

Yes, with the browser extension you can translate web pages and view bilingual video subtitles side by side with the original Indonesian.

How well is formatting preserved, and what are the limitations?

Formatting is kept as far as possible: PDF translations keep columns, headers and footers, captions, and paragraph levels, bold text stays bold, links in the table of contents and cross-references still work, and sentences split across page breaks are rejoined before translating; Word, PowerPoint, and EPUB files keep their formatting as far as possible, and Excel numbers and formulas are left as they are. Font sizes and line breaks may adjust when translation length changes, and complex layouts, scanned PDFs, heavy watermarks, or language-dependent Excel text formulas should still be checked against the original in the side-by-side workspace.

How is text translation billed, and can I try it out first?

New accounts receive 200 credits to try it out, and purchased credits never expire and are shared across the website and extensions (the smallest pack is $10 for 10,000 credits). Text translation is billed by length at 10 credits per 1,000 tokens, where 1,000 tokens is roughly 750 English words or 1,000 Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, or Hindi characters.

How is my privacy protected and how long are uploaded files kept?

Uploaded files and translated results are kept for 14 days so you can view and download them, then removed from access, and you can request deletion of your submitted content and account data at any time. Equalang does not sell personal data or use your submitted or translated content to train AI models.
