Translation notes

Small choices shape a clear translation

Equalang keeps the information that makes a sentence useful, not just understandable.

Avoiding False Cognates

Words like actually and actuellement look alike but differ in meaning, requiring context-aware translation.

I am actually working on another project.

En réalité, je travaille sur un autre projet.

Formal Register and Politeness

French marks social distance through vous, whereas English relies on modal verbs and polite phrasing.

Veuillez trouver ci-joint notre proposition.

Please find attached our proposal.

Adjective Word Order

Most French adjectives follow nouns, but common adjectives like grand or beau precede the noun.

He bought a beautiful electric car.

Il a acheté une belle voiture électrique.

Punctuation Spacing Conventions

French requires a space before two-part punctuation marks like colons and question marks, unlike English.

Qu'en pensez-vous ? C'est parfait !

What do you think? It is perfect!

Common questions

Before you translate

How does Equalang handle idiomatic expressions between English and French?

Equalang uses AI to identify figurative phrasing and suggest natural cultural equivalents rather than translating word for word. Because nuances can be subtle, you should always have a person review important texts.

Can Equalang translate live conversations between English and French speakers in real time?

Yes, Equalang can translate live speech both for listening and for face-to-face conversations. As with any AI translation, you should have a person verify important communications.

How well is formatting preserved, and what are the limitations?

Formatting is kept as far as possible: PDF translations keep columns, headers and footers, captions, and paragraph levels, bold text stays bold, links in the table of contents and cross-references still work, and sentences split across page breaks are rejoined before translating; Word, PowerPoint, and EPUB files keep their formatting as far as possible, and Excel numbers and formulas are left as they are. Font sizes and line breaks may adjust when translation length changes, and complex layouts, scanned PDFs, heavy watermarks, or language-dependent Excel text formulas should still be checked against the original in the side-by-side workspace.

How is text translation billed, and can I try it out first?

New accounts receive 200 credits to try it out, and purchased credits never expire and are shared across the website and extensions (the smallest pack is $10 for 10,000 credits). Text translation is billed by length at 10 credits per 1,000 tokens, where 1,000 tokens is roughly 750 English words or 1,000 Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, or Hindi characters.

How is my privacy protected and how long are uploaded files kept?

Uploaded files and translated results are kept for 14 days so you can view and download them, then removed from access, and you can request deletion of your submitted content and account data at any time. Equalang does not sell personal data or use your submitted or translated content to train AI models.
