Translation notes

Small choices shape a clear translation

Equalang keeps the information that makes a sentence useful, not just understandable.

Noun Measure Words

Chinese requires specific measure words for nouns, so translations must choose the right classifier.

She bought three books and a coffee.

她买了三本书和一杯咖啡。

Time and Place Order

Chinese places time and location before the verb, whereas English typically places them at the end.

我们明天在办公室开会。

We are meeting in the office tomorrow.

Passive Voice Handling

English frequently uses passive voice, while natural Chinese often converts it into an active structure.

The report was approved by management.

管理层批准了这份报告。

Name Order Conventions

Chinese places the family name first, while English puts the given name first in Western order.

王伟是我们的新项目经理。

Wei Wang is our new project manager.

Common questions

Before you translate

How does Equalang handle idioms and proverbs between English and Chinese?

Equalang uses AI to capture the context and find natural cultural equivalents for idioms in both languages. Because figurative meanings can be nuanced, someone should review important texts.

Can I translate web pages and video subtitles between English and Chinese?

Yes, the Equalang browser extension translates web pages and video subtitles while displaying the original text beside the translation. For critical content, it is best to have a person check the AI translation.

How well is formatting preserved, and what are the limitations?

Formatting is kept as far as possible: PDF translations keep columns, headers and footers, captions, and paragraph levels, bold text stays bold, links in the table of contents and cross-references still work, and sentences split across page breaks are rejoined before translating; Word, PowerPoint, and EPUB files keep their formatting as far as possible, and Excel numbers and formulas are left as they are. Font sizes and line breaks may adjust when translation length changes, and complex layouts, scanned PDFs, heavy watermarks, or language-dependent Excel text formulas should still be checked against the original in the side-by-side workspace.

How is text translation billed, and can I try it out first?

New accounts receive 200 credits to try it out, and purchased credits never expire and are shared across the website and extensions (the smallest pack is $10 for 10,000 credits). Text translation is billed by length at 10 credits per 1,000 tokens, where 1,000 tokens is roughly 750 English words or 1,000 Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, or Hindi characters.

How is my privacy protected and how long are uploaded files kept?

Uploaded files and translated results are kept for 14 days so you can view and download them, then removed from access, and you can request deletion of your submitted content and account data at any time. Equalang does not sell personal data or use your submitted or translated content to train AI models.
