This Privacy Policy explains how Equalang (the "Service", "we", "us") collects, uses, and protects your personal data when you use equalang.com, its browser extension, and its API. It also explains the choices you have. We aim to collect only what we need to run the Service.
1. Who is responsible for your data
The Equalang team is the party responsible for the personal data processed through the Service. You can contact us about privacy at support@equalang.com.
2. What we collect
Account information
When you sign in, we receive your email address and a unique account identifier from our authentication provider. We do not store your password.
What you ask us to translate
When you use the Service, we receive the documents you upload, the text you paste, and — where you use the browser extension — the text of the pages and subtitles you ask it to translate, together with the translations we return. This text is sent to third-party AI providers so that it can be translated and returned to you. Neither we nor, under our agreements, those providers use it to train AI models.
What you say, and what your camera sees
Live interpreting needs your microphone. While a session runs, your speech is streamed to third-party providers that recognise and translate it, and the words come back to your screen. The audio itself is not kept: what we store is the session record — the recognised text, its translation, the languages, and the times — which you can read and delete in your history. Photo translation works the same way as a document: the picture you take or choose is uploaded, translated, and kept for the same limited window.
Conversations with someone else
A call has two people in it, and both sides are recognised and translated so that each can read the other. The conversation is kept as a record you can read and delete in your history.
Usage and job data
We record information about the jobs you run, such as file names, token counts, the languages chosen, timestamps, status, and the credits charged. We use this to operate the Service, show your history, bill credits, and monitor reliability.
Payment information
Payments are handled by our payment processors, Creem and Waffo Pancake (whichever is offered at checkout), each acting as the merchant of record. Your card data is processed by them under the PCI-DSS standard and is never stored on our servers. We do receive a record of your order (package, amount, status) to grant your credits and keep your purchase history.
3. What the browser extension reads
The extension is the part of the Service that touches the most: to translate a page it has to read that page. It is worth being precise about what that means.
- It reads the text of a page only when you start a translation there — by pressing its button, its floating control, or its keyboard shortcut. It does not read pages you have not asked it to translate.
- The text it reads is sent to the Service, and on to an AI provider, so it can be translated and returned.
- It does not collect your browsing history, and it does not report which sites you visit.
- Translations are cached in your own browser so a page you revisit does not cost credits again. That cache is local; you can clear it, or turn it off entirely with privacy mode, from the extension settings.
4. How we use your data
- To provide the Service — translate what you submit, return the result, and let you download it.
- To manage your account, credits, and purchase history.
- To secure the Service and detect or prevent abuse.
- To comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use what you submit or what we return to train AI models.
5. Legal basis for processing
Where data-protection law such as the GDPR applies, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Performance of a contract — to provide the Service you have signed up for, translate what you submit, and manage your Credits and purchases.
- Our legitimate interests — to secure the Service, prevent abuse, and improve reliability, in a way that does not override your rights.
- Legal obligation — to keep the accounting and transaction records we are required to retain.
- Consent — where we ask for it specifically; you can withdraw consent at any time.
6. Who we share data with
We share data with a small number of service providers that help us run the Service, only as needed:
- An authentication provider, which manages sign-in and your account identity.
- Our payment processors, Creem and Waffo Pancake, which process purchases as merchant of record and handle your card data.
- A cloud object-storage provider, where your uploaded documents and translated results are stored.
- Third-party artificial-intelligence model providers, to which the text you submit is sent so that it can be translated and returned to you.
- Third-party speech providers, to which audio is streamed while a live interpreting session runs, so that it can be recognised and translated.
These providers process data on our behalf under their own security and privacy commitments. We do not otherwise disclose your personal data, except where required by law.
7. International transfers
Translation is an inherently cross-border service and our providers may process data in countries other than your own. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards for such transfers.
8. How long we keep data
We keep data only as long as we need it:
- Uploaded documents and their translations stop being downloadable after the retention window shown on the upload page, and are then deleted; the job record itself remains so your history stays complete.
- Account and usage records are kept while your account is active.
- Order and payment records are kept for as long as accounting and tax law requires, even after account deletion.
- Audio is not retained at all: it is recognised as it arrives and discarded. The session record that remains is text, and you can delete it from your history whenever you like.
- Photographs you translate follow the same rule as uploaded documents.
- Text translated by the browser extension is cached in your own browser, not on our servers, beyond what is needed to complete the request.
You can ask us to delete your uploaded documents and account data at any time, subject to records we must retain for legal or financial reasons.
9. Security
We use technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your information against unauthorized access.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact support@equalang.com. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.
11. Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies that are necessary to sign you in and keep the Service working (for example, to maintain your session and remember your language). We do not use them to build advertising profiles.
12. Children
The Service is not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
13. Changes and contact
We may update this Policy from time to time; we will update the "Last updated" date above when we do. For any privacy question or request, contact support@equalang.com.
